THE ASL FELLOWSHIP IS PACKED WITH ONCE-IN-A LIFETIME EXPERIENCES

ASL Fellows participate in two special meetings each month with the program coordinator. One meeting each month typically involves interaction with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) or the Israeli intelligence and security agencies. The ASL program coordinator arranges activities, staff rides, briefings, formal facility visits, and other exchanges with Israeli officers.

The monthly excursions during the 2003-2004 academic year included the following:

September/October 2003: Jerusalem borders, security fence, and checkpoints

November 2003: Israeli-Lebanese border and northern security fence

December 2003: Demography and trip to central IDF absorption base at Bakum

January 2004: War of Independence, Burma Road tour and visit to IDF paratrooper training base

February 2004: Visit to Ariel and the Palmach Museum

March 2004: The Reserve Army and the Israel Air Force Museum

April 2004: visit to Gush Etzion and the Central Command reserve training base

ASL Fellows are required to study Hebrew during the summer before the start of regular classes. Many also study Arabic.

Toward the end of each academic year, the ASL Fellows are expected to prepare a report detailing their experiences. View the reports.

Practical Experience That Evolves With The Times

Each year the Foundation sends one of the Directors to meet with the Fellows and with the faculty and staff at the host institution. Direct interaction with the Fellows and with the faculty and staff helps the Foundation to maintain a program that is relevant and enriching as the regional and global security situation evolves over time.
